When a Missouri rescuer set out to assist a mother dog and her litter of puppies, the task seemed simple enough. The mother dog waited quietly with her pups, radiating hope despite their predicament.

However, as the rescuer was about to lead them away, she noticed something unexpected—another puppy, smaller and more fragile, trailing behind the crate. What started as a routine rescue mission quickly turned into something much more complex and rewarding.

Donna Lochmann, responding to a report of a dog family abandoned in an empty house, was prepared for the challenge. She arrived equipped with a trap, ready to manage space in her vehicle for the canine family.

To her surprise, there was not just one large dog, but another, complicating matters considerably. Donna suspected this second dog was likely the sister of the mother dog.

Before turning her attention to the puppies, Donna focused on safely containing these two adult dogs. Using treats, she patiently waited for one to enter the trap, ensuring a safe space to continue her search.

With the help of construction workers who had initially contacted Stray Rescue of St. Louis (SRSL), she scoured the yard and discovered the puppies nestled in a pile of lumber.

Once Donna had secured all eight puppies, the mother dog also entered the trap. She reset the trap for the second dog, who, as if understanding the situation, obediently followed suit and entered the trap as well.

With the entire dog family safely in hand, they were transported to SRSL’s veterinary clinic, where they received medical evaluations. Fortunately, the vet gave them all a clean bill of health.

Reflecting on the bond between the mother dog and her sister, the rescuers named them Award and Prize, deciding they should remain together.

While all the puppies have since been adopted, Award and Prize are waiting for a loving family willing to embrace them as a pair.

Both dogs have adjusted well to their new environment, showing they can thrive with anyone ready to open their hearts and homes to this inseparable duo.
