Every dog should live a life filled with love and happiness. Sadly, many dogs, especially those that are older or disabled, often miss out on this due to neglect and the risk of euthanasia. However, in a heartwarming turn of events, one special spaniel avoided such a fate when kind-hearted people saw beyond her challenges.
Greenacres Rescue shared on their Facebook page the touching story of a female spaniel named Arie, found abandoned in a car park. She was born with six legs and other physical anomalies. Without any details about her past, the rescue took Arie to the vet to determine a treatment plan, aiming to give her as normal a life as possible.
Her unique name, Arie, was inspired by her resemblance to a mermaid, as noted by Mikey Lawlor from Greenacres Rescue in an interview with the Western Telegraph. Encouraging news came when tests revealed Arie was healthy, and the extra limbs could be surgically removed.
Despite her physical differences—additional back legs and an incomplete pelvis due to an extra hip joint—the shelter was optimistic. They planned to let her settle before considering surgical options to remove the unnecessary limbs and assess the functionality of her remaining leg.
After a period of rest and numerous vet visits, Arie was ready for surgery. The procedure was successful. As surgeon Aaron Lutchman told the BBC, “She’s doing really well, she’s bounced back and she’s a happy little dog.” Ariel was soon up and exploring, thanks to her dedicated foster family, who ensured her recovery went smoothly.
In just a few months, Ariel fully recovered and was ready to find her forever home. Her journey caught the attention of people worldwide, leading to an abundance of adoption applications. Ultimately, a family grieving the loss of their pet found solace and joy in adopting Arie.
Expressing her joy, Emma-Mary Webster shared on Facebook how Arie has become a cherished part of their lives: “Ariel is already loved by so many and has been on quite a journey. Raised by a special lady named June, who worked wonders caring for her, Ariel is a vibrant and gentle soul, bringing so much joy into our lives.”
Ariel’s story is a testament to the kindness and teamwork of those who helped her. Greenacres Rescue thanked everyone involved in transforming this once-abandoned pup into a beloved pet, reminding us all of the power of compassion and community.
