When Donna Lochmann, the chief life-saving officer at Stray Rescue of St. Louis in Missouri, received an urgent call about a dog and her puppies in distress, she and her partner Randy sprang into action, heading directly to the location to lend their support.

On arrival, they found a protective mother dog shielding her pups, barking loudly to warn them to stay away. Despite her clear signals to keep their distance, Donna and Randy were committed to ensuring the safety of the entire family.

In an attempt to calm the situation, they offered food to the cautious mother. This small gesture allowed them to edge closer to her litter, although she continued her loud barking, indicating they were yet to win her trust.

Changing their tactics, Randy kept her engaged with food, speaking to her softly, while Donna made her way closer to the puppies. This careful planning worked, enabling them to safely reach and secure the young pups.

As Donna gently transported each puppy to safety, she discovered one more puppy trapped under a pile of leaves, caught against a fence, and whining for help.

She proceeded with patience and caution, eventually freeing the pup without causing any harm, ensuring its safety and well-being.

While this was happening, the persistent barking of the mother dog made it clear that she was still wary of these new strangers, underscoring the need for an alternative approach to safely bring her in.

Donna and Randy devised a plan to use a humane trap to secure the mother dog safely.

Initially, she circled the trap cautiously, unsure about entering. However, with time, her suspicion waned, and she ventured inside, causing the trap to gently close.
