For several days, a small white puppy found herself abandoned in a roadside ditch, feeling scared and isolated, struggling to comprehend her abandonment.
This poor pup was not only hungry and in pain, but she also held onto the faint hope that her situation might improve.
Questions like, “Why did you leave me if you didn’t care? Why am I hungry and in pain? Why am I here?” swirled in her mind. However, these questions faded away when she decided to trust a kind person who stopped to help. This decision changed her life for the better.

While strolling down a quiet North Carolina road, Margaret Hamilton, the founder of Ruby and Laurel Animal Rescue, Inc., noticed something odd – a tiny white figure scarcely visible in the ditch.
Her instincts kicked in, prompting her to stop at once.
As she got closer, a strong odor from the dog’s matted, infected fur filled the air, tugging at Margaret’s heartstrings. The puppy looked in terrible condition, her body covered with sores, and her spirit seemed to be fading away.
Luckily, it was a rescuer who discovered her.
“Despite experiencing the worst from humans, this little one bravely crawled out of the ditch and into my arms. She’s scheduled for medical attention and vaccines first thing tomorrow,” Margaret expressed on TikTok.

In spite of her pain and fear, the puppy used her remaining strength to approach the kind-hearted woman. When Margaret cradled her in her arms, the puppy relaxed, finally realizing she was safe.
Once back at Margaret’s home, the puppy began her recovery journey. Margaret carefully clipped her overgrown nails and gave her a soothing medicated bath to relieve her raw, sunburnt skin.
The next day, Margaret took her to the veterinarian for a comprehensive check-up. Fortunately, she tested negative for heartworm. Although estimated to be about three years old, she was so malnourished that she appeared significantly younger.
Her poor condition told a tale of neglect and suffering.

Margaret decided to name the little dog Slurpee.
In just a few days, Slurpee showed signs of improvement. Her eyes sparkled, her tail wagged, and her gentle demeanor began to shine.
“Slurpee’s condition improves daily, and her skin issues are starting to resolve. Though demodectic mange looks alarming, it’s not contagious,” Margaret updated.
Medical Update! Slurpee is around 3 years old and heartworm NEGATIVE! Happy, happy, happy dance!
Slurpee is now safe, loved, and on the road to recovery. In a few weeks of care, her skin will heal, her strength will return, and her past trauma will be a distant memory.
For sweet Slurpee, brighter days are just beginning. Those who wish to support her recovery and help other dogs in need can contribute through the rescue’s GoFundMe page, spreading hope and care to more animals in distress.
