On a frigid morning, a mother dog faced a dire situation when she was abandoned and left tied to a signpost at the edge of a shelter’s driveway. Terrified and anxious for her four shivering puppies, she could only hope for a helping hand to rescue them from the cold.
Her puppies clung to her, burying their faces into her fur to seek solace and warmth. The mother dog lay on the icy ground, encircling her little ones in a desperate attempt to shield them from the chill. As they huddled together, she longed for someone to arrive and whisk them away to safety.

When the security team at Kloof and Highway SPCA spotted the stranded furry family, they quickly notified Inspector Kerrie Andrews. Assuming a dog needed help, Inspector Andrews hurried to the scene. However, the reality she encountered was more heartbreaking than anticipated—a frail mother dog and her puppies, bundled together on the cold earth.
Inspector Andrews noticed that only the mother was tied, yet luckily, her puppies remained close by. Her priority was to get the family indoors swiftly. Understanding the mother dog’s wariness and protective nature, Inspector Andrews began a gentle approach to earn her trust. With a calm voice and a patient demeanor, she eventually reassured the mother dog of her good intentions.

“Mom was nervous and did not trust Inspector Andrews, but with a bit of gentle talking and patience, she soon realized that she was safe. The puppies were just happy to be with their mom and out of the cold,” explained Brigitte Ferguson, a marketing assistant at Kloof and Highway SPCA, as shared with The Dodo.
After the mother dog accepted help, the SPCA staff made it their mission to comfort the furry family. They settled them into a soft bed under a warm lamp and provided warm water bottles for added comfort. Nutritious meals helped the mother regain her strength to care for her puppies. She was also treated for fleas, ticks, and worms immediately.
Since their rescue, the canine family has made a remarkable recovery. The mother dog has gained considerable weight and looks much healthier. Although she still gets anxious around new people, she soon warms up to them, even seeking cuddles. The puppies are thriving, joyfully playing together.
Soon, this loving family will be ready to find forever homes where they will be cherished. There’s hope that they will find families who will care for them deeply and provide the warmth and love they so deserve.
