When Barilla arrived at a rescue center for cats and dogs in Granada, Spain, she was in a dire state, severely underweight and struggling with failing organs.
Her muscles were too weak for her to stand, and she was paralyzed in some areas, causing concern among the staff about her chances of survival. With a weight of only 7.2 kg, the staff knew that saving her life required immediate and careful attention.
To help Barilla regain her strength, the rescue team used a support to help her muscles develop and ensured she was hydrated for six continuous hours before administering any food.

Barilla had multiple scratches on her legs from dragging herself along the ground, but after the hydration, she was able to stand briefly and drink some water.
Within just a week of intensive care and therapy, Barilla gained 4 kg, though she still found it challenging to stand or walk for long periods without collapsing.
It took another six weeks before she could eat properly, but by then, she had transformed into an agile and lively dog, running and leaping with ease.

Eduardo Rodriguez, 37, the owner of the shelter, was instantly smitten with Barilla and decided to adopt her.
She now lives happily at the Rodriguez family home on the outskirts of Granada, where she joins his wife, 14-year-old daughter, and five other dogs.
Eduardo mentioned that adopting Barilla was a decision made with his heart, especially since it was his first adoption following the loss of one of his dogs five years ago. “Her will to live was astounding, and I felt an instant bond with her,” he shared.

Barilla’s recovery has been nothing short of extraordinary. By the fourth day at the center, she was already eating five to six meals daily, gaining a kilogram each day. Her weight reached a healthy 20.8 kg, and she is now almost fully recovered.
It was the local community that found Barilla and alerted the rescue center and authorities. At the time of her rescue, she was just ten months old. The police are actively investigating the circumstances that led to Barilla’s poor condition.
