On March 24, 2017, the wilderness witnessed a heartwarming event as Kinna, an orphaned elephant under our care for nearly 17 years, embraced motherhood and gave birth to her first calf.
Kinna’s story began with her rescue as a sunburnt baby from Meru National Park in central Kenya. Despite losing one ear due to severe burns, she stood out among wild herds as she grew older.

The joy was immeasurable when Kinna, accompanied by her companions, Chyulu, Lenana, Naserian, and Loijuk, proudly introduced her newborn daughter, ‘Kama,’ to the world.

She marked a significant milestone in Kinna’s life, evolving from a vulnerable orphan to a nurturing mother, passing on her strength and resilience to her offspring.
As we observe and support their journey, the marvels of the natural world unfold.

The herd’s celebration echoed through trumpets and cheers as Kinna approached the fence.
Initially guarded by Lenana, Chyulu, and Naserian, Kama found reliable caretakers in Yetu, Mwende, Loijuk, and even little Wiva in the subsequent weeks.
While Kinna, a respected herd member, may not have as many nannies as others, her disciplined approach prevails.

Displaying a strong-willed nature since her nursery days, Kinna keeps a close eye on Kama, ensuring she stays close.
Kama, resembling Wiva at birth, lacks distinguishable features, and her character traits have yet to emerge.
The arrival of a new baby has shifted dynamics among younger siblings, with Wiva and Mwende taking on protector roles while Gawa remains attached to her mother.
The group celebrated Kama’s arrival unitedly, but the harmony dispersed as some ventured towards Tundani, drawn to areas with recent rainfall and lush vegetation.
Galana, her calf Gawa, and their nannies separated from the herd.
Meanwhile, with Kama and other companions, Kinna chose to stick together, providing hope for the arid surroundings near Ithumba with recent rainfall around the hill.
Kinna’s journey unfolds in this tale of wilderness, showcasing the resilience and beauty of life in the wild.
