A truck driver, Mario Rodriguez embarked on a remarkable journey spanning over 2,800 miles to save a pit bull named Hickory from being euthanized at the Animal Care Center Shelter in New York.
Despite residing in California, Rodriguez couldn’t ignore the picture of Hickory, a two-year-old pit bull, flashing a wide grin, who was unfortunately on the euthanasia list.

Having grown up with pit bulls and cherishing them as part of his family, Rodriguez felt compelled to intervene and offer Hickory a fulfilling life.
Despite the daunting distance and logistical challenges, Rodriguez boldly decided to drive non-stop, staying in constant contact with the shelter to ensure Hickory’s safety.
Throughout the arduous journey, Rodriguez was fueled by the anticipation of meeting Hickory and witnessing the joyous reunion.
Upon arrival, Hickory’s excitement was palpable, reaffirming Rodriguez’s determination and dedication to saving him.
Upon bringing Hickory home, he seamlessly integrated with Rodriguez’s two other pit bull companions, quickly becoming an inseparable part of the family.
Recognizing their bond, Rodriguez made Hickory his co-pilot, allowing him to accompany him on his trucking routes.
Now, Hickory enjoys a life of adventure, accompanying Rodriguez on their travels across parks and farms, relishing every moment of their shared experiences. With his bed in the truck, Hickory is content and cherished as a valued family member.
