Zoe, a young Great Pyrenees puppy from Ramona, California, learned the hard way how curiosity can sometimes lead to trouble. What began as an ordinary day of exploration quickly turned into a stressful situation for the adventurous pup.
While roaming near her family’s residence, Zoe found herself stuck between two massive boulders. The space was so tight that she could neither move her legs nor lift her head.
Trapped and scared, Zoe whimpered, hoping someone would hear her cries for help.

When her family realized Zoe was nowhere to be found, they began searching the property, calling out her name in desperation. To their surprise, they discovered the sound of faint cries echoing from the rocks, revealing Zoe’s predicament.
Realizing they couldn’t free Zoe on their own, the family contacted CAL FIRE/San Diego County Fire Department. Firefighters swiftly arrived and assessed the situation.
As they crouched beside the boulders, they spoke soothingly to Zoe in an effort to calm her and began planning how to safely rescue her.
“Zoe was visibly distressed,” fire captain Mike Cornette shared with The Dodo. “Firefighters quickly began assessing how to safely free her while keeping both her and her family calm.”

Initially, the team attempted to manually shift the boulders, but the rocks proved too heavy.
As the complexity of the rescue became apparent, they called in the Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) team, who arrived with specialized tools and experienced in similar rescues.
After examining the situation, the USAR team opted to employ pneumatic airbags, devices designed to lift heavy objects gently and gradually.
Firefighters carefully slid the flat airbags beneath the boulders and inflated them slowly. Everyone watched as the rocks began to lift, creating a larger gap.

As the opening became wide enough, a firefighter reached out, coaxing Zoe to wiggle free. With quick maneuvers, Zoe managed to squeeze through to freedom and darted straight into her family’s arms.
Overjoyed to be reunited, Zoe’s tail wagged energetically as her family showered her with love. Witnessing the heartfelt reunion, the firefighters shared in the joy of the moment.
“It was an incredible moment,” Cornette reflected. “Our firefighters often respond to emergencies on what could be the worst day of someone’s life, so it’s always rewarding when a call ends on such a positive note.

Seeing Zoe reunited with her family brought a lot of smiles that day.”
Thanks to the swift actions and teamwork of the rescuers, Zoe’s misadventure concluded happily. That night, Zoe settled comfortably beside her family, content and loved, ready to embrace future adventures with newly learned caution.
