Understanding why someone would harm an innocent animal without reason can be puzzling, especially for those who love dogs. Some individuals act with cruelty for no clear reason, leaving heartbreaking stories in their wake. One such story is that of Spencer, a Doberman with a difficult first year of life.
Spencer was discovered alone on a highway in South Carolina after being hit by a car. The friendly Doberman was seen scavenging for roadkill to survive. Thankfully, some kind-hearted people rescued him and took him to Paws & Claws in Columbia, South Carolina. Upon examination, the veterinary team quickly realized the extent of his injuries, including a fractured back likely resulting from the car accident.
It was evident from Spencer’s poorly done ear crop that he had suffered from mistreatment, likely performed at home. X-rays revealed another alarming issue—a mass of sharp bird bones in his stomach threatening to cause severe internal harm. In addition, Spencer bore numerous cuts on his head and legs, further indicating a life of neglect and survival on the streets.
With the expertise of the VCA Animal Specialty Center of South Carolina, Spencer’s prospects began to look more hopeful. Despite his injuries, his small size was advantageous, increasing the likelihood that he would recover and walk again after surgery. Remarkably, even before surgery, Spencer could feel his legs, providing a hopeful sign for his rehabilitation.
Spencer underwent successful back surgery and was on a promising path to recovery, relearning how to walk. His stomach also began to clear on its own as the bones started passing through his system naturally. Encouraged by this progress, the team at Paws & Claws, along with physical therapists, diligently worked with Spencer to aid his recovery. His progress was rapid, and he soon transitioned from using a sling to standing independently. Spencer emerged as a lively and healthy young dog, ready to embrace a bright future.

Now surrounded by canine siblings and a caring family, Spencer’s resilience and joyful spirit have captured the hearts of all who meet him.
