At a shelter called Oromocto and Area SPCA, a feisty senior cat named Max has become quite the character. Known for his unique way of getting attention, Max isn’t shy about using his paw to give a playful smack when his boundaries are pushed.
Tracy Marcotullio, the shelter manager, shared with The Dodo that “if you don’t read his cues properly, then you’re getting smacked,” highlighting Max’s straightforward approach to communication.
Despite only being at the shelter for a short time, Max has left a lasting impression on the staff with his spirited demeanor.

Though he relishes the affection from his caretakers, he has a clear sense of when enough is enough, earning him the endearing reputation of a “cranky old man.”
In a light-hearted response to Max’s behavior, the shelter staff created a sign to track his no-smacking streak. Each day Max refrains from smacking is a small victory, and the sign proudly displays his longest streak of four days.
However, streaks inevitably return to zero, often commemorated with a pin for the lucky person who experiences a ‘Max smack.’

Understanding Max’s quirks is key for the shelter team. They know that cleaning his cage can be overwhelming for him, so they let him roam free with other cats during this time.
Armed with his favorite treats like canned food and Temptations, they know just how to soothe the spirited feline.
As amusing as Max’s habits are, the ultimate goal for Marcotullio and her team is to find him a loving forever home. Since sharing his story on social media, interest in Max—and his fellow shelter residents—has soared.

“He’s helped to bring attention to other cats in the shelter too,” Marcotullio notes, recognizing Max as a catalyst for increasing adoptions.
For now, Max remains at the shelter, charming everyone with his feisty personality and waits for the perfect family to whisk him away.
Until that day comes, he continues to delight staff and visitors alike with his playful antics, leaving a trail of affection—and occasional smacks—in his wake.
