Just days before Clementine was scheduled to be put down, Chelsea Elizabeth Cossairt came across the little pup’s portrait online and felt an instant connection.

A couple of weeks back, the Southern California animal control department had found Clementine, a frail puppy, wandering the streets. Due to her serious health issues, she was placed on “death row” at the shelter. Yet her photograph tugged at Chelsea’s heartstrings, prompting her to act.

Chelsea quickly submitted an adoption application and received an unexpectedly emotional response. “The worker at Ginger’s Pet Rescue was in tears and amazed that we were interested in her,” Chelsea shared with The Dodo. Interestingly, among all the applications the shelter received in the previous two weeks, not a single one had been for Clementine.

Rescuers acknowledged that Clementine faced an uncertain future given her poor health. However, Chelsea was determined to provide her with a loving home. “She had such sad, empty eyes,” Chelsea recalled. “Whenever we approached her, she would lower her head and avoid eye contact.”

Despite her initial fearfulness towards humans, Clementine immediately bonded with Chelsea’s other pets, Moose and Maple. This was the first glimpse Chelsea had of the joyful and spirited dog Clementine could become. “She found comfort being close to them, moving with them around the house or yard,” Chelsea explained.

After months of vet visits and treatment for her medical conditions, Clementine’s health began to improve. She became more confident and started to warm up to her human family as well. Seven months later, Clementine enjoys gazing lovingly at Chelsea.

“She loves making eye contact when we pet her and listens intently when we speak to her,” said Chelsea. “While she’s still wary of strangers and can be startled by sudden movements, she has come a long way.”

Now, Clementine is a curious and playful dog, as if she is experiencing puppyhood for the first time. Above all, she feels safe and secure in her new home.

“When we work from home, she likes to lounge at our feet and welcomes belly rubs, a sign of trust she only showed a month ago,” Chelsea said. “Her explorations of the house are endearing, and sometimes it feels like she’s discovering everything anew. She’ll nudge your hand if you pause petting her.”

Clementine has transformed significantly since her adoption. Once a frightened pup facing shelter walls, she’s now a loving and integral part of her family, who can’t imagine life without her.
