Never underestimate the determination of a stray dog striving to survive.
If Sugar Snap could talk, that’s exactly what he’d express. When he first arrived at the Chicago ER, he was in dire straits, weighing a mere 19 pounds and unable to stand, walk, or even lift his head. For this unfortunate stray, the outlook was grim. However, he clung to life with surprising tenacity.

Today, Sugar Snap is a picture of health and happiness, captivating everyone with his remarkable transformation.
Here is the journey that brought him back.
In February 2024, as a parent was driving their child to school, they spotted Sugar Snap curled up on the roadside. The passerby made a quick, life-saving choice to stop and help.
Sharing this turning point on Instagram, Sugar Snap’s rescuers described the scene, “A passerby was on a school run and saw something by the road. Instead of moving on, they stopped.”

From there, One Tail At A Time Rescue in Chicago came to his aid, dedicating time and resources to nurture Sugar Snap back to health.
Under veterinary care, he received blood transfusions and constant attention. His rescuers posted updates saying, “Sugar Snap arrived at 19 pounds, incapable of walking or lifting his head. Despite the scares at the emergency vet, with emergency blood transfusions and extensive testing, he continually showed his will to live.”
Throughout the ordeal, Sugar Snap remained filled with hope. Despite severe malnourishment, his eyes reflected gratitude towards his rescuers, as if silently thanking them.
His indomitable spirit and charming personality enchanted everyone at the hospital.

His caregivers often stayed close, offering comfort and companionship. Miraculously, just a few weeks into his stay, Sugar Snap gave his caregivers a delightful surprise by learning to walk again.
That pivotal moment marked the start of his recovery. He began to gain weight and showed a healthy appetite.
Things took an even brighter turn when Dr. Richie, one of his vets, offered to foster him.
To commemorate his departure from the ER, the staff organized a heartfelt farewell for him.

A video shared the joyful moment, “After 20 days at the emergency vet, Sugar Snap has LEFT THE BUILDING!! He went home with his foster, one of the ER vets.”
In his new home, Sugar Snap was embraced by his new family, which included two furry siblings—Fitz, a 12-year-old dog, and a cat named Noodle. With Fitz’s guidance, Sugar quickly learned good behavior and settled into his new home.
It wasn’t long before Sugar Snap won over everyone’s hearts, culminating in his adoption.
The team at One Tail At A Time shared a touching video of Sugar Snap’s “Gotcha Day” celebration, surrounded by those who cared for him.

His new family gave him a memorable welcome with his favorite treats and friends, marking the start of a new chapter in his life.
His former caregivers were overjoyed with Sugar Snap’s new beginning. The update read, “We couldn’t have hoped for a happier ending for this once-lost Chicago stray.”
Today, Sugar Snap revels in his new life, ready for adventures and cherishing every moment with his beloved people and animal companions.
