Maria’s early years were filled with difficulty and neglect, yet beneath her weary exterior was a gentle nature yearning for kindness and affection. Sadly, instead of being cared for, Maria was abandoned and left to fend for herself.
When Maria was eventually discovered, her situation was critical. Found in an alley, she was covered in fleas, her head drooping from exhaustion as if each step drained her limited strength.
Her desperate attempt to survive was heartbreaking for the people who found her.

A turning point came when a police officer named Christopher discovered Maria in Norristown, Pennsylvania. Recognizing her dire condition, he didn’t hesitate to act.
“We found a young female dog who was too weak and tired to stand on her own. She has clearly endured a rough start in life and appeared ready to give up,” Christopher wrote on Facebook.
Realizing the urgency, Christopher reached out to Philly Bully Team, who quickly arranged for Maria to receive emergency treatment at an animal hospital.
The impact of prolonged neglect was severe. Maria weighed only nineteen pounds, her energy depleted, and her blood pressure dangerously low.

Philly Bully Team confirmed the tragic reality: Maria’s condition resulted from weeks, even months, of neglect.
“This didn’t happen overnight. Maria’s condition is the result of extended neglect, and she’s covered in fleas,” the rescue organization stated.
Against challenging odds, Maria’s resilience shone through. With immediate medical care, gentle attention, and continuous support, she gradually began her path to recovery.
Maria’s medical team dedicated themselves to stabilizing her condition. She received consistent treatment, was monitored constantly, and was lovingly cared for by volunteers from Philly Bully Team. Slowly, her body began to recover.

Eventually, veterinarians diagnosed Maria with cat scratch fever, a Bartonella bacterial infection. This required long-term antibiotic treatment and attentive care.
Fortunately, she found a sheltering home with Maia Hottinger, a seasoned foster caregiver who provided Maria with the nurture she needed.
Within a supportive environment, Maria started to heal both physically and emotionally. She began eating well, raised her head, and wagged her tail. Regular play with her foster siblings brought back her energy and joy.
“Maria’s love for meeting new people is infectious. She’s so happy now, it’s hard to believe the journey she’s been through. We’re incredibly grateful to see her progress,” Maia shared with GeoBeats Animals.

Watching Maria grow healthier and more energetic each day filled Maia and her family with gratitude. The once frail dog now greeted them with happiness, spreading warmth everywhere she went.
Maria has yet to fully recover, but she thrives under Maia’s care. Her eyes are brighter, her movements more confident, and her spirit renewed. She continues to receive medical care and remains closely monitored until her next vet appointment.
“She’s not ready for adoption just yet. Her next veterinary check-up is in two months, and we’ll continue fostering her until then. After that, she should be available for adoption,” Maia concluded.
For now, Maria enjoys a life of comfort, play, and companionship, a testament to the power of compassion and care. To follow Maria’s uplifting journey from despair to hope, Maia shares daily updates on Instagram.
Once uncertain, Maria’s future now holds the promise of love and stability.
