A family recently discovered three blind cats—two males and a female—roaming around their property, struggling to find food and shelter.
Concerned that the cats could not survive on their own outdoors, the family decided to take them in, providing them with food and water. However, upon planning to have them spayed and neutered, they learned that the female was pregnant.
Seeking help, they reached out to City Kitties DC, a local animal rescue organization, with the hope of finding a foster family for the expecting feline.
Jen and Ian, who have ample experience caring for blind cats, opened their home to the mother cat. They prepared a cozy nursery, fully equipped for the arrival of the kittens.
To their surprise, Jen was caught off guard one day by the sound of kittens crying. The mother cat had given birth to four kittens, with three making it through the first hours.
Jen managed to assist a weak, cold kitten by warming it before the attentive mother took over.
The brave mother, now named Red Sonja after a fictional warrior, nurtured her surviving kittens lovingly. Red Sonja was born without eyes, and Jen foresaw that some of her offspring might share this hereditary trait.
“We’ll find out if they’re blind once they are 2 to 3 weeks old. Regardless of whether they can see, we adore them,” Jen said.
Meanwhile, one of the male blind cats required extra socialization, so another foster family with expertise in caring for blind cats stepped in. The animal rescue organization further offered support with the remaining blind cat found by the family.
Red Sonja has been a diligent mother to her three kittens—Sheena, Dread Pirate Roberts, and Falkor—who are lively and growing each day.
Dread Pirate Roberts, a brown tabby who faced a rocky start, is now thriving alongside his siblings. Sheena, the largest and most vocal of the trio, has already become the group’s leader.
“Though she’s eager to explore her newfound world, she’s still mastering control of her little limbs,” Jen noted about Sheena.
The ginger kitten, Falkor, appears to have inherited his mother’s condition, being born without developed eyes. “He’s got a sweet nature, just like his namesake,” Jen added.
Red Sonja, content in her foster home, eagerly seeks attention from Jen, who visits regularly to weigh the kittens. Jen ensures she announces her presence to avoid startling Red Sonja as the mama cat navigates the room expertly, taking breaks whenever necessary.
Through the camera in the foster room, Jen has observed Red Sonja playing and moving around with ease, signifying that her blindness doesn’t hinder her capabilities.
The family, flourishing under care, will never experience the uncertainty of outdoor life again. Meanwhile, Red Sonja’s kittens will only know a life of comfort and safety indoors.
